Angels Said Do Not Be Afraid

Jim March 9, 2025 Theology

The Angels said Do not be afraidHave you ever entered a room saying do not be afraid? Perhaps it is because people are, understandably, not terrified when we walk in. I suppose if I was a violent man and came in furious, it could happen, but just walking in to tell you good news would not cause that. The angels said do not be afraid. Take a look.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.

Angels are nothing like the cute angels you sometimes see in images. I guess because Sunday school teachers  do not want to terrify children, they might say they are cute and about the size of a small child.

Angels Said Do Not Be Afraid, Think About God

That is not the case at all. Angels are tremendously powerful beings of a totally different form than we small humans. They come in the room, and we are terrified like a ghost might terrify us, but even more so as the ghost may not be powerful. Angels clearly are.

We have heard the greatness of God and may think his heralds would be weak and puny. Thinking this tends to make our view of God into a frail and kindly old man.

That could not be farther from the truth. God is awesome in power.

Fortunately, He is also loving and sees us perfectly which we cannot do ourselves. His goodness is beyond our understanding. So, God and the angels are good and absolutely terrifying as they are so powerful and completely out of our control.

We should not see him as less than all powerful, but he loves us, so we do not need to be afraid. Jesus came in weakness, so we could connect with him.  The angels at the tip of this iceberg know how they make us terrified. God does even more so, but He is also the God of all comfort.
