Priorities in Christian Life According to Bible

Jim January 22, 2022 Family Issues, Theology

priorities in Christian lifeHmm, what about priorities in Christian Life? I love my wife. My kids are precious. I also love the birds near our home. My job and the house we own, I also love. I love my country and am politically center right.  Oatmeal is part of my every morning routine and am not as happy if I cannot. I love God and am His forever.

Now when all these needs and wants come at once, which is most important?

What Does God Say In His Word?

Jesus gave us two commandments, so let’s start here.

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Form this I see God comes first, people second and myself in a tie for second.

Among people I note some hots spots for God.

He says a marriage is two people becoming one.  The Bible says that about nothing else in my life.

This is what he says about my spouse.

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Then, He says this about some others.

21 “Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt.

22 “Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless.

He says people are more important than animals. Only people are made in the likeness of God.

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

And we place family of believers before others, but do good to all.

10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Our Priorities in Christian Life

  1. God is first and foremost as made us and gives us all.
  2. My spouse is the most important person in my life. Apparently, I must love myself to love her well.
  3.  My kids as they are helpless and are my responsibility.
  4. My parents in old age need help and are our responsibility.
  5. Widows and the fatherless and foreigners are helpless and should not be mistreated but also not responsible for like the above. Somehow, we should protect and provide for the helpless.
  6. Christians are like our family and come before common people.
  7. All people
  8. Animals

Studying and working and playing and eating are things we do for these priorities above.

I belong to a church and vote in Elections. The church is my spiritual family and politics should always fit under the 8 above.  I play soccer and like to run. I often read the news. All these must fit after or because of the above 8 points.

Love God and love people as myself does just about say it all.
