That Which is of First Importance

Jim July 21, 2024 Church Work, Culture/Sociology Issues, Theology

that which is of first importance The Bible notes what is of first importance. So, lets take note here in I Corinthians:

15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas,[b] and then to the Twelve.

It is so important that the apostles formulated this saying seen here in verses 3-5. Paul knew the truth because Jesus knocked him to the ground in Acts 9. Not so long later, he traveled to Jerusalem and met with Peter and a few more. They taught him this short way to speak of the most important historical event. In fact, it is of first importance in the universe and our own lives.

Why so? The tragedy of mankind is that God made us, but we sought our own way when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit. God said they would die if they did, but they were still alive for many years. Why did God say they would die? Did they die when they ate the fruit? Yes the most certainly did. They had been like a branch of a great tree, but they tore themselves from the tree in that day. Adam and Eve were still green, but they had left the author of life. They would die without God.

It is Of First Importance As It Solves So Much

So much sorrow followed after that day.  After Millenia, the main thing or that which is most important fixed it! Kingdoms may rise or fall, but that which is most important will carry us home and fix the break with our God. All we need do is turn to God and believe. Yes, God so loved the world(us)…

Again, Jesus died according to the scriptures, thus canceling the debt of sin for all who would believe on his name. He then rose showing us that he had power over life snd death. Of course this is most important. Being good or going to church or getting baptized with water will never save us.

Paul, the Apostle, writes of many things in I Corinthians., but only says one thing is the most important. Let’s never lose sight of this.

By dying for us, Jesus had in one act undone what Adam and Eve did to separate us long long ago. It is the good news. We can be children of God.
