3 Valuable Things in God
Here is a well known passage with 3 valuable things in God we can put to work:
He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly[a] with your God.
The small ‘a’ next to humbly means many respected translators feel the word prudently is more correct, but humbly has most.
Now, the text. In the old testament era of so many needs to sacrifice and actually a lot of rules, God sent them certain reminders, and this is one.
We are called to act justly. This has the ring of fairness and honesty. We should act in way that we could let all see and not be ashamed. It is asking us to watch our behavior. It takes our vigilance.
To love mercy is an attitude so different than the first. Furthermore, to love mercy is to be attracted to mercy in a strong way. Finally, to see people with mercy as God does to us– is an ask to have us be like our Heavenly Father. It is the work of a lifetime. How do we take the first step? We should pray in all things, but here, I think I need to go to God and say, “Lord, I do not love mercy, Lord, here is my heart. Help me to be like you.” We need to watch our heart and pray to God to transform us inwardly often. To pretend has no place in this ask from God.
Some of the 3 Valuable Things in God Look Deeper
To act mercifully when our heart is not right can be a step, but it must be with a heart to move at our inmost place. Some personalities more naturally are merciful, so they might want to think where they do not feel mercy and how God sees that place.we must be careful not to put ourselves in the judgement seat.
Walk humbly with God means not to walk behind or in front. We must see that we are sinners and others might unexpectedly be in front of us in line for heaven. We must back off enough on judging others or God knowing that God is the only righteous judge. This also is an attitude. It will require an internal work within us. God wants to help us get there. May we cooperate with God and seek him in this path. Let us not do this out of fear, but out of love. Pray and pray. We will make the Father smile.
