Disputable Matters and the Bible
This web site is called www.Mainthing.Us not US but Us because the main thing is for us. My recognition of the problem of the main thing began my junior year of college. My best friend and I were passionately active in a college ministry called The Navigators. To date, we are both still passionate for God. However, at the time, I had a matter of disputable matters and the Bible to face and learn.
This began when he decided to do less ministry work and focus on studies more as he was aiming for medical school and would need better grades.
I was aghast. It seemed to me that he was denying God and leaving the faith. A wise adult leader of our group took me aside and introduced me to Romans 14:5.
5 One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.
Both Choices Possible on Disputable Matters and the Bible
Which day is sacred is not the main thing. Which day is more sacred is a disputable matter. God did not list studying for med school for God or starting another Bible study for God as the main thing or even commands. Paul writes more and then says:
22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves.
If I kept condemning my best friend for choosing medicine, I may have been fighting against God. The whole matter was disputable. For me to stop starting another bible study and go to study economics would have been against my sense of what God wanted from me. Who was I to say what God wanted from my best friend? Let us love one another as Jesus asked and not stand above or below people. Let’s be brothers and sisters.
