Judah Employed a Prostitute

Jim July 7, 2025 Theology

Judah employed a prostituteIn Genesis, Jacob has 12 children, and he proclaims the 4th son to be his heir. He kicked out the oldest Reuben for sleeping with his concubine. He kicked out Simeon and Levi for making enemies with the local people.  Judas employed a prostitute publicly, and Jacob named him the heir.

Now, even then people considered prostitution as a bad thing. Judah’s wife had died, so he was not unfaithful to her, but he hired a prostitute.  In the book of Leviticus, God shows he detests prostitution, but Leviticus was written later. No such law existed for Jacob’s sons at this time, but no one considered prostitution a good thing.  The two oldest sons of Judah were evil and God personally killed them. We see no sign that Judah took any responsibility for his evil sons.

Judah and the prostitute, his daughter-in-law, Tamar, are in Jesus ancestry. The Bible openly shows it.

Why is Judah the chosen one as it were?  Judah did keep his brothers from killing Joseph, but did it by selling him into slavery. He hid all this from his father.

Judah Employed a Prostitute and is Chosen!

Judah’s behavior and his sons show nothing good. Jacob gives up on 2 of his sons for avenging their sister’s rape. He gives up another for sleeping with his concubine as I mentioned. He does not kick out Judah though he slept with a prostitute. God hates and accepts all this. Now, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were all deceitful under pressure. All these patriarchs were also in Jesus ancestry.  King David is as well and had Uriah murdered. God went out of his way to make sure Jesus ancestry is found to be filled with sinners.

Jesus is our Savior. We needed to know that we hurt you when we do not love our children well. We need to know that sex and deep emotional intimacy is for marriage alone. Judah had no such training or perhaps even good guidance. We live in a time of so much light. They walked in so much darkness. They hurt and got hurt blindly. We may see these obvious things, but we also hurt and get hurt blindly even now. God help us love you and trust you to help us live open lives of love for you, others and ourselves.
