We are Being and Being

Jim April 27, 2025 About Me, Family Issues, Theology

we are being and beingWe are being and being is a funny phrase and might just help us. Despite or perhaps because my parents were all about – you do and you are, I found God and found myself.

I grew up in an ideal childhood where my parents liked me and supported me and did not criticize me. Yet, in middle school I sensed the future was darkness and opened a Bible as did not like that feeling.

That led me to faith. I was a fabulous doer in faith and did more than those around me. Finally, I learned that God loves us for who we are. What He is drives all the rest of what we experience. Who would introduce himself by saying I am?

14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.[a] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

I would have said, “Call me I do.” God invented time. So, He/They (the Trinity) were always being before time and not being part of creation are centrally being.

We Are Being and Being as He is Being

Think about the Beatitudes. God did not ask us to build mountains to prove us or him. The Beatitudes are really a shocking banner for the Christian faith. When we focus on him, and we see how strange he is in his name and in his banner in the Beatitudes. we need to feel that the world is somehow wrong. We are part of that and those of us named doer are very much a part of that problem.

We need to let God work deeply in us to help us be m0re than we do. Look at Romans 12:2

2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Be transformed is quite a phrase. This is not about what we do but rather who we are. That is what God is about. Can we let him do this work in us? He can free us from do and have.

It is not magic. We need to spend time with Him.  We need to be uncomfortable. God is not like us. However, we need to grow to be like Him. He is why we came to faith.
