What is Good News? Yes, The Very Best News

Jim November 21, 2021 Church Work, Theology

what is good news The term good news gets thrown around a lot. What about that? What is good news?

The term appears 44 times in the New Testament. In old English, good news was said gospel. So, it still appears in the Bible due to tradition.  Guess we should pay some attention to Gospel and Good news. The Gospel of Mark begins.

1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,[a] the Son of God,[b]

Therefore, Mark’s whole book is about the gospel. Indeed, news about Jesus is a most excellent message, start to end.  The Greek word is euggelion. It means good news/gospel.  In ancient times, it was not often used. However, Jesus and the Christians who brought it into Greek gave this word tons of meaning.

Here is Core Data

See what Paul says gospel means to him is.

15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

So, we see the good news is the main thing. Now, everything about Jesus coming to be with us was happy information and certainly that is what Mark meant by saying his whole book was the best of news. The best of the wonderful news is definitely the main thing which Paul and Mark would not want us to see as a lesson we once learned.

Good News Then, Now, and Forever

We need to enliven our faith and return to the cross again all our lives.

Lord, help us be moved again and again by the cross. You did everything there to fix our broken relationship with you. Help us deeply hold the truths living there. May we ever have passion to tell others this message of hope. For it is very good news. Amen.

God loves us and wants to know and care for us. He proved it at the cross. Furthermore, he also paid for all our sins there, and so, did a double duty at least.  God loves us so much that he did this to reach us and mend his own heart. This is better than best news.  In Chinese, it is translated form Greek to the word fuyin 福音.  It translates to English literally as blessed sound. May we give this blessed sound to a lost world in love just as given to us.
