Storing up for what?
Storing up for what? I here want to open up a topic on material wealth and Christians.
Jesus says:
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
To state more clearly what Jesus says here, he is saying that we should give a tenth of everything we make and not forget justice, mercy and faithfulness.
God does not need our money. We need to let go of our control and let other people decide what to do with the 10% that we give away to God’s work. God is sovereign, and we are not. He has enough and will always take care of us.
God Speaks On Storing Up For What Purpose
Jesus talked to a Rich man:
22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
Jesus only told one person to do this. I feel confident others might need the same advice. I guess we all hope it is not us.
Luke recorded a story of Jesus about a man with big harvests:
17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”
Saving for something we need and then buying it is ok within this teaching. Saving so I can take life easy is condemned. When God said on 6 days you should work, he was not punishing us. Work is good for our souls. Rest is also good, but work for the Kingdom of God if you have enough money. Be generous and live for God knowing that we are rich in Him when we trust Him.
See what Malachi wrote:
10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
Ah, may we live for Him all the time and even in finances.
