The Seen or Unseen In Us

Jim June 29, 2024 About Me, Theology

seen or unseenSeen or Unseen, a division we could use to think on more. The painting is a Rembrandt. Growth in the unseen takes effort. What does the Bible say?

2 Corinthians 4:18 says

18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I am a visual person, so I need this regular reminder. My bank account and car are seen. The love that attaches my wife and I to each other is unseen. The hope I have for eternity is unseen. God is a spirit and therefore unseen. So many struggles about the seen in our life. They are temporary.

How is the attachment to my kids these days? Can you measure that love or see it and hold it in your hand?  No, but it is a treasure that money or other seen things cannot buy.

God gives us love. Hmmm love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control.

I came to faith about age 12. In my 20’s I could say I had self control, patience, peace and kindness in hand as ESTJ people often do when healthy. Each type of personality naturally has a few or several.

Seen or Unseen – Let’s Seek the Unseen and Unmeasurable

Seeking God and the unseen he longs for us to grasp, is a long process. I gradually learned to grasp love, goodness, faithfulness and gentleness in more moments and more situations. These are not mine, but in Christ I have learned to back off on self control and gather in goodness and love in God’s timing.

Some times I have lost ability to grasp these as have not held tight to God.

I did not mention faithfulness and joy. Joy, my deep hope to grasp more. Faithfulness, hmm, I have it and don’t. I would need more definition.  I definitely hang on to God, or rather he hangs on to me. He is faithful.

So, unseen, my family is glad for every little bit of unmeasurable and unseen progress I make. God is too. Let’s keep growing as we are children all our lives.    The seen is not evil. Jesus died visibly on a cross, and we need that.
