Revelations and the Main Thing

Jim May 5, 2024 About Me, Church Work, Theology

revelations and the main thingRevelations and the main thing are on the table today. First, I should here review. The main thing is all that Jesus did on the cross for us to save us from our sins, and he saved us utterly. But how do revelations relate to what Jesus has done? That would be what we’re talking about now.

What Jesus did on the cross opened a door for us to be friends with God, to be his children, to be his workers, his soldiers here on earth. His work opened the door that we have already entered eternal life.

This relationship and what God did to bring the Holy Spirit, once Jesus had left, means that we can get revelations, right, just these pieces of light that come to us while we live this life before God.

Now, I’ve talked about revelation once before in this blog, but here, let me just go on this again. We need to have refreshment to our faith regularly. Like, when we first believe, the Bible is like a gem to us. We dig into it. We don’t just read it as a novel, but we read it verse by verse, read, reread, and just dig into what God’s saying.

Revelations and the Main Thing Come Together

And there we are in the midst of God’s presence. But gradually we can grow cold, or if we’ve never really learned how to dig into the Bible, it can seem just kind of, you know, feel more and more distant from the point at which we believed.

So revelation first brings us to faith, so we can just cross the river and say “I’m yours, Jesus, I’m following you.”

However, God is not mute. He speaks to us through the Bible, through our friends, and through the Holy Spirit. Sometimes in church, you might just get it, but it’s the revelation of God that we need. We need continuing revelation to live this life.

An example was that I was just reading in Corinthians in the second chapter, and, suddenly, God hit me with-

2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power.

First, Paul resolved to only know the main thing. Paul is highly educated and a very confident person. Only Jesus work on the Cross could make him see things humbly.

Yet here, Paul starts to open up just about Jesus crucified, the main thing. But then verse 3, he says “I came to you in weakness, with great fear, and trembling.”

So here is the Bible, a revelation from God to me, where God’s saying, “Jim, are you sharing from strength and confidence, or are you like Paul, sharing with great fear and trembling, not with human wisdom, but by God’s power, so I can be seen.”

So let’s be open to revelation and stay close to the cross.
